In a bunch of different places I have seen people mention "800 Spears + 200 Archers" as their first Army. It seems to be universal. Why is the the acknowledge perfect first Army?
New to the game and just trying to understand the source of some of teh conventional wisdom.

it depends on your purpose. i use this formula because many people just build spears and they are obliterated by spears+archers. is good for first assault on weak players, and is cheap.

if you want to fight against spear then 1000 archers are very good....but you can only pillage with them or attack a province with fort 0...if you want to destroy a fort 2 you need 800 spears  |

You are trying to defend or attack? To defend it seems acceptable, but for attack is the worst combination i have ever seen. If you want to attack go for 800 swords + 200 cavaliers |

when this army meet a fort, it just dies and radooo is right, army for low points, around 100 |

Well.. I just learned why people go with the 800 Spears + 200 Archers as their first attacking army. I had been running some BattleCalc sims and decided that it would be more effective to have some Swords in the mix. So I pulled together an Army of 200 Spears + 150 Swords + 150 Archers. BattleCalced it against my Target and it was a beautiful thing. Went to launch the attack and....
Minimum 1000 Soldiers to attack. The 800 Spears + 200 Archers is just the cheapest combo that will do the job and meet the 1000 Soldier minimum rule.
Anyone know why that rule exists? And is it in the Manual somewhere and I just missed it?

Low or high point, 1000 soldiers are 1000 population. If you just want to have an army in the third day, you will see that are very few targets available and they are also generally too far away (of course cartography is 0). I prefer to wait 2-3 other days, and get a decent army of 1000 swords (or 800 swods + 200 cavs). They die less, so i don't have to continuosly disband workers for new soldiers (or i have to disband less).

There are plenty of targets don't worry...and normally you don't lose any army and you take a lot of gold ...and you can use them after that to colonize  |

It is just a lot of Resources to pull together. 6000 Iron is not so easy in the first day or two. Unless I am missing out big time! (Buying credits would obviously make this easier since a 28 hour day would become a 38 hour one)

you can make those resources only after 3 days (not 1 or 2)...and you have the resources for them in 3 days using 4 hour bonus and easier if you use that 6 hour bonus too (not to mention the 10 hour bonus) |
