Noob Question: How are Points calculated?

I looked for a thrad or a FAQ.  If there is one, please just post the link.

I couple of things implied that points were from Resources spent, but perhaps not on everything.

I want to be sure not to poke my head above 50 pts inadvertantly.  Does anyone know exactly how Points are calculated?  Is it tomething as simple as X points per Y Au equivalent spent?  Or of Z Au equivalent net value?

every 1000 gold invested in buildings/technologies = 1 point (calculated on base price - uni/arch will decrease the price you pay but not the points you get)
every 1000 gold invested in army = 2 points in new realms and 3 points in old realms - if you lose army you also lose the points (realm rules - http://www4.imperiaonline.org/forums/int/index.php?topic=3445.0)
