Mae govannen!
New to the game, so my suggestion will not be extremely detailed. Very well made game; my compliments to the designers.
I've read through the rules, started building my little empire and monkeying around with the interface... when it occurred to me that this is a mediaeval game... and there is no Church!
Now, seriously, I think this is a thematic element and a practical touch that is sorely missing in any mediaeval game. The only other browser game I've seen that uses the Church for anything is Tribal Wars. (Mediaeval: Total War [MTW] also uses the Church, and priests & bishops, but that isnt a browser game.)
In Tribal Wars (TW), the Church in a village gives a boost to morale to the troops of that village. It also has a sphere or influence or radius that affects other friendly units in that sphere/radius. I think that is a good idea.
Now, in Imperia Online (IO), I can see how that idea could be easily incorporated, since there is already a very well developed morale system: it wouldnt have to be invented from scratch. Church influence could be one other variable in the overall morale calculations.
Also, IO has an honour system, which I think is unique. I think that you could incorporate a Church into the honour system. For example, if you attack a church, you could lose honour. Or, after the system employed by MTW, you could have rival Churches (Catholic & Orthodox, for instance) or even rival religions (Christian, Islam, & pagan); destroying a church (or mosque) in a rival religion could increase your honour, whereas destroying one in your own religion (but belonging to someone otherwise an enemy) would decrease your honour. I dont know how much, or to what extent, but it seems feasible and would add another strategic consideration with regard to whom to attack and how.
Now, in MTW, the Catholic faction has a Pope (kind of like the Godfather, for those who are familiar with Mafia Wars) who can give bonuses to the Catholic faction. He can also 'excommunicate' a Catholic who attacks another Catholic. That could easily be incorporated into IO, I think: for instance, any loss of honour otherwise incurred, could be waived against an excommunicated player.
Of course, you'd have to have some way for an excommunicated player to become 'un-excommunicated'. A handsome cash donation to the Church, for instance, could remove it...
Anyhow, just thinking aloud. I did a search, didnt see any other threads that mentioned this, and so I thought I would throw in my $0.02, FWIW.

no hard feeling Ciryaraine but please IO, don´t mix the game with religions. Religion causing enough trouble in real world ... we don´t need that in IO.

relligion is great idea! Crusades and jihads! exactly for that reason religions shouldn´t be added to IO. I have been in alliance where muslim and jews were playing together.

It's okay. I dont take any offence. However, I will point out that the use of churches works in other successful, similar video games; there is no reason to believe it wouldnt work in this game. I gave you two examples: Mediaeval: Total War, and Tribal Wars. Another browser game that uses churches is Dark Age Wars. All three are mediaeval browser-based strategy games.
In game terms, all it would amount to is (probably) a morale boost and a grand 'faction', more or less.
But, whatever....

_rico,
You're right. My mistake. MTW is not a browser game. But TW and DAW are.
