Which is better?

Just started playing and so far I am really liking the game!

My question is tho...it is better to colonize several areas first, or build up your intial province to a powerful level first?
My goal is to get an army going...but right now im stretching for the resources to build one.  I have lv 7 granary, 2 medicine...and have about 10k pop out of max 20 so..

tips?

I always try to get 5 provs in a + sign asap... with  a mountain (with forrest) prov in the middle... this means the mountain prov in the middle is boxed and the enemy that tries to attack it has a morale loss of 20 pts.... I feel kinda naked without a boxed prov

yes at least 5 provs, but 8 is the ideal if you want to be a warrior, allows for good pop and resource production...

University & architecture is also super-important!    But if you can chose between centralization and anything else, always chose centralization.

@ hiske... fifth province boxed ?  no... box maybe at 7 or 8 province... before 15k points. Until there you always can hide your resources.

depends on the style a lot.

provinces are very important for both mil and eco player (and trade  ), but there a slightly different strategies for colonization. for farmers, is better to go for plains and mountain boxed the last provinces, since they usually don`t have an army to be protected. for warriors, mountains should be one of the first provinces to be colonized (2nd of 5th), since they need a good boxed fort for the army. there are a lot of suggestions spread around the old forum http://www4.imperiaonline.org/smf/index.php

 At the moment I'm playing only with one province. I get all my income from other players. And I can sleep  with the knowing that my resources are kept safe and I have minimum defeats.

You can't have a depot with one province

I have 7 or even 8 level fort and around 30 - 50k points.  I'm warrior.

not a good warior I'm sure of that, good warior need to think about economy too, if not he will be only a toy in other hands realy soon or will be a farm realy quicly, it's my opinion of cours,
