cavalry flank size= min ((swordsman+spearman+cavalry)/5  ,  cavalry)
where swordsman ,spearman  and cavalry represents numbers of each unit player has on start of combat.
Light cavalry is positioned at flank first, then h.cavalry then paladins

1000 swordsman, 2000 spearman, 1000 archers and 1000 cavalry...you'll have 800 cavalry on flanks...20%*(1000 swordsman+2000spearman+1000cavalry)=800...archers don't count

Its always best to get as many calvary into the flanks. You can do this by using spearmen. They're cheap and fast to train.
