i had kinda bad luck with my provinces. will greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have about my options regarding the colonization strategy

Well, if you want to box a province, then go for 7 or 12 .... but it's not the end if you plan on playing a very aggressive, offensive kind of playing (you got lot of plains too), and if pop growth is slow in mountains, they got some nice production bonuses too

2, 6, 8, 12 is your box for a low-point, military strategy.  Capital is wooded mountains.  Perfect.   
Plains are for fortress 1 & farming.  Be low key.  Build up all your resources under 50 points.  Do not mind pillages.  They are low military points scores for your opponents.  In one 24 hour period I took an open field surrounding #8 province, switched capital well away from #8 and I am on my way to a Level 5 fortress in my new capital.

You can too.    But be a little patient (3-4 weeks build up)
