where to put soldiers

I am building the army (as always...), but I'm in doupts...
Of course, if I have archers, I put them in the fortress. But what if I have a big fortress and a few archers? Do I fill other soldiers in?
I expect, as long, as there is room for the entire army in the fortress, I put it in... or what?
And how small can an army be, before it becoms pointless to let it fight?

army size matters relative to the opposing army, not the space of your garrison.
whether 50 archers are in a fort 1 or fort 6, they are still effective : they'll just last longer because the walls are stronger and thcker
