illegal war

yesterday when i leave the game nobody have declare war to my alliance and today when i start playing again another alliance have declare war to us in the morning and a few hours later the war starts and now me and another player of my alliance we are almost destroy because we dindnt even know we are at war.My question is when an alliance declare war to another you got 24 hours before starts?? what happens here??
