Title: Just got a new Province, any advice?
Post by: Mortem Aeterna on January 21, 2010, 11:14:24 AM
Hi guys, I just started playing a few weeks ago and starting to like the game.

I just colonized my neighboring province (Mountain with Forest) and is planning to switch my Capital there once I establish a level 3 Fortress in the area, after which I'll box it in for added defense. Do you guys have any advice on what structures to build there? Well aside from the Lumber Mill, Stone Quarry and  Iron Mine. Shall I also construct high level barracks there as well as the other provinces once I colonize them?

Thank you for your time.

Focus on building Granary = increase the population growth, which is very slow in mountain provinces.
But mountains provinces are not good to recruit soldiers, so donĀ“t waste money on building barracks there. You should try to colonize Plains/Plains with Forest as well for army recruiting.

as kop's said i wouldnt train ANY troops especially if it sounds like you want to use it as you base. You will eventually use this region as a staging area for your troops to launch attacks from and return to, this costs cash to support the troops on mission, you will need ALL the population you have then to stop going into massive debt to pay ever increasing armies wages. ONLY recruit from provinces that can still grow. for ages i onkly recruit from one province (8) only later when i get decent economy and need to put lots of troops into the field at once do i8 concider training in other provinces BUT never my capital  *ok*

Anyway build barracks in you capital. It can happen that someone is attacking you and you can't remove all resources, so you can just hire soldiers, which is an economic way to spend them :D

Thanks for the advice guys.

About defense, do I leave portions of my army on other provinces to defend them? or should I just keep them all at my capital (mountain with forest)?

Never leave army at home, except for archers inside fortress. And remember fortress is for archers only. Keep attacking with your army on active players or inactive(=coins, =goldmines,) =terrahawks  *freak* Keep your army moving from your capital-province, don´t split em to many provinces. Unless you have Bank-Loan then you move either the army or the capital from that province so you don´t have to pay upkeep and interest from the same province.

rule of thumb is an army split between provinces makes them nice bite size targets to take out

I agree with this, but just a L1 barracks is sufficient. It's cheap to build and it may help you use up resources in a hurry, or if you can't build a farm in time and your population is maxed out you can build some troops then. Otherwise, absolutely don't produce any troops at all in a mountain province. Build the granary high and produce pretty much all of your troops in province 8. Maybe later in the game you'll have other plains provinces for building troops as well.
