Let us say I have a fortress with capacity of 10. The fortress is currently holding 8 gold.

If my army is returning with a 4 gold, then what happens to the extra 2 gold. Would it be lost? or it will be placed in some escrow till I level up my fortress??

Gold will be in the capital province but will be above your capacity that can you receive. So you will not lose the gold, just will not be able to compounding gold as long as your capacity is not less than the capacity of which can you possess. You can increase the capacity of gold that can be stored in the empire by making higher level of forest all around empire.
