2nd row standing around...

I have been watching the battles of the day and I note many times that 2nd row soldiers never fight, even when 1st row flank, the 2nd row just sits there! 
I would tell my soldiers to kill the siege equip before flanking anyway, but standing around is unacceptable in my army.   
Do they actually cause damage or do they really just sit there?

The visual second line soldiers is actually the reserve. It fills for one of the killed battle zone of the first line.

The problem, if I lose a battle due to morale loss, is that I will wish the 2nd row contributed their damage to reduce the enemy faster.  Not to mention, the bals and cats and trebs continue to shoot until all the other units are destroyed.

I think it makes more sense for all soldiers to fight once the enemy army reaches a certain % troop loss.  75% army unit loss for example.  Especially, if 2nd row is going to stand around and get pounded by cats and bals...

Curently 10% of army is reserve and, as said, joins battle when one of front position is destroyed. Thats how battle works. This reserve keeps archers in 1 zone safe for little longer. All armies could fight right away, but its made with reserve and it works that way.
